Bulletproof Vests for school safety when kids fight back
We do not think that child safety involves children going to school wearing bulletproof vests or that workplace safety requires us to wear bulletproof vests. However, we do believe that real people, not just police, deserve to have the option of outfitting themselves or their loved ones, friends, family with a defensive barrier that is effective against a deadly assault. As past law enforcement officers ourselves, we were already aware of the fact that bulky and uncomfortable protective gear, like the old body armor styles, provide no safety when they are left in the locker at work. The same theory is true of all protective equipment: If it is not practical or comfortable, it will be used less and therefore will not be available when needed. With this in mind, we knew that any type of defensive protection we could design would need to be practical and easy to integrate into normal daily activities. We also felt that it would have to be discreet, so that only the user was aware that they had a protective shield against gunfire. Otherwise an assailant could go to extremes to defeat the passive protection provided. Like any security risk: A targeted, directed assault will most likely defeat passive defensive strategies. At this point we realized that backpacks and bookbags, courier bags, and briefcases were already a well established accessory for every age group in our society. It seems that we start carrying packs to school in our earliest days and carry a briefcase of some sort or a bag to work into our last working days. It became clear that this was the most practical place to hold a defensive bulletproof “shield”. We started with a line of 2 bulletproof backpacks (backpacks we manufactured with a NIJ Tested Threat Level 3a bullet resistant panel integrated into the back panel of the pack) and had instant notoriety in the mainstream media from Boston newspapers to MSNBC, CNN and Reuters to nationally syndicated talk radio. Since then we realized, mostly through consumer feedback, that we needed to expand the product line. A stand alone bullet resistant or bulletproof panel was needed so that anyone could use their favorite pack, case or bag and simply make it into a defensive barrier by integrating the panel on it. We also expanded into travel-on luggage for airline travelers and simple duffel bags. We also saw that we had the ability to make a simple and affordable bulletproof vest by using the panels we were already making, to create a front and back barrier that could be worn in an emergency situation. The intent of this product was to provide more complete coverage for consumers that felt that their job or position in life created a higher risk and would therefore be able to keep the vest product within reach if needed. An interesting approach came out of this idea: A user that sensed a higher risk potential could keep the vest in their pack/case/bag, just like the stand alone BulletBlocker Panel (but twice as thick at 1/2 inch thick total) and would have a bulletproof backpack that he/she could then reach into and take the panels out of and wear as a vest in a critical moment, or as an additional benefit, a BulletBlocker Backpack with the integrated panel or a pack/case/bag with the stand-alone BulletBlocker Panel, could house the vest discreetly, and at the time of need the vest could be worn and the pack/case or bag with the BulletBlocker Panel could be used as an additional shield to cover the head and shoulder area or simply be used to be positioned between the user and the assailant as a shield. In fact, the BulletBlocker Bulletproof Vest has been such a popular item and consumer demand has been so great, that we expanded our line a step further with vests by offering a full concealment vest like those worn by police, with wrap around side coverage and a contoured design to provide more complete torso coverage, again, like the police body armor. The vests we offer are not really intended to be the passive defensive barriers like we designed for the backpacks, briefcases and bags carried by kids at school. We did not intend to imply that kids should wear bulletproof vests to school, these were simply an extension of our rapidly expanding consumer base. We realized that a lot more people feel that they are at risk than we ever expected. As we hear their stories, we also realize that their feels are often well founded. As our education around this issue has expanded, we have learned more and more about the issue of violence in our society. Statistic like “Someone is shot every 18 min. in the U.S. by a handgun” have been cited by reputable sources like NBC news and other news sources. Our constant monitoring of the school violence issue has made it clear to us that, even though the high profile incidents only seem to happen every 6 months to 12 months or so, every week there are more incidents reported around the country than we can keep up on with our news page or blog. If I had to guess, I would venture that 2 - 3 schools are locked down somewhere in this country every school day.
Our most recent additions to our product line have been focused on school safety and classroom safety, as well as survival and preparedness planning. We include survival and preparedness in our product planning because of a huge spike in sales around the time of last October’s stock market drops and the near collapse of the financial system. We saw that civil unrest became a real concern for ordinary people and that lots of people were buying our products for “just in case” scenarios. Please check out our newest product at BulletBlocker.com.
We have done our best to keep our prices low to make our product affordable by real people. Those same people/kids that all have iPods that are more expensive than our BulletBlocker Bulletproof Backpacks or BulletBlocker Bulletproof panels and bulletproof inserts. We know iPods are fun and are extremely popular, but every one of those kids also has a backpack that they stick their iPod in while at class. Parents should also realize that the iPod will not stop a bullet. Our protective BulletBlocker Bulletproof Products not only offer the added safety, but they also provide peace of mind. The kids in school watch more school shootings on Youtube than their parents. This is not only because parents don’t want to know the reality of today’s school safety concerns (don’t we all want school to be like it was when we were kids?) but because most school systems are already practicing school lock down drills or are adopting “kids fight back” / “teachers fight back” strategies, which are telling our kids that school shootings are a risk they are living with already. The kids “get it”. We hear feed back every day and the kids really get it, it’s the parents that seem to be the most resistant to accepting that schools aren’t facing the same concerns as they did when “we were in school”. Kids want to wear bulletproof vests but are happy to have an alternative like a bulletproof backpack.

Boston News WBZ reports on Georgetown MA plan for kids to fight back : We can help
The BulletBlocker staff noticed the11pm WBZ News in Boston - CBS affiliate reported that children in Georgetown are going to be taught to fight back against armed school shooting intruders. Under the story title "Schools wants to teach kids to fight back under attack - School Threat". The Georgetown MA Police Chief, Jim Mulligan, speaking on behalf of the school safety / school resource officer, stated that there is planning underway to teach the children and teachers at the Georgetown Elementary School level and up, including the Perley Elementary School, Penn Brook School and the Georgetown Middle School and Georgetown High School, to fight back against an armed intruder, much like programs being taught in Key West Florida for school defense and other locations around the country. This is also a method endorsed by SafePlans, a company that works with school systems to develop classroom safety plans and emergency response plans in the event of emergencies in schools around the country. Georgetown School Superintendent Carol Jacobs stated that the children were not going to be taught to throw their backpacks at intruders but that a fight back training method would be under review.
From BulletBlocker's review of similar plans, the method, in fact does seem to include throwing books and backpacks and the use of desks and other classroom objects as cover and/or weapons to assail an intruder so that the number of school shooting victims is minimized by stopping the attack earlier than in the Columbine attack. In fact, this is also a trend that is being accepted in the law enforcement community in general. As opposed to staging and holding the schools under siege, so to speak, law enforcement planning is shifting towards quicker confrontation of the perpetrators.
What we propose at BulletBlocker is that many of the deadly outcomes could be changed if our products were incorporated into family safety plans as well as classroom and school safety planning. If, as reported in this WBZ Boston news story, the plan is going to involve kids/students and teachers alike participating in trying to stop the attackers, why not use BulletBlocker safety products like our Bulletproof Teacher Safety Seat Cushion, or have an emergency Bulletproof Vest available for teachers and principals, like our BulletBlocker Executive vest, which stores flat and compact, but would be available to the staff and students at the moment of need. Classroom safety sould also be enhanced by our classroom safety and survival kit. Our kit comes packed in our BulletBlocker Bulletproof Backpack and includes a trauma based first aid kit as well as lock-down and shelter in place survival items such as high calorie food bars, packaged water and sanitary supplies, for those long term lock down situations. At the family level, for less than the cost of an iPod, school kids Kindergarten through college have BulletBlocker Bulletproof Backpack options. We have packs with integrated bulletproof panels, as well as small and large bulletproof panels that can be put in a pack or bag the student already uses and they effectively add a bulletproof shield to the bag or pack.
As one of the Georgetown children interviewed said, 'We are told to cover the windows with paper, but they can just smash the window and still get us.' At BulletBlocker the 3 retired deputy sheriffs that are the company founders created the backpacks and defense items to give children and teachers an added advantage in a school assault. We hopefully suggest that parents and authorities review our unique product line to see for themselves how these products could truly change the outcomes for many of these school safety and defense scenarios. Al BulletBlocker products are tested to the NIJ Threat level 3a standard, which stops up to 99% of all handgun bullets, up to and including the powerful 44 Magnum bullet.

Preparing for a workshop
I am preparing for a workshop this weekend. Here are a couple of slides:
Here are the statistics:
Within 1 hour, there will have been 180 violent crimes, 11 forcible rapes, and 2 murders in the US. Additionally, 342 children will have been abused or neglected in the US.
We can expect a multi-victim school shooting somewhere in the world every month. Millions of street children are starving around the world and being recruited into criminal and terrorist organizations.
Here are some specifics:
•A 13 and an 11 year old killed 4 classmates and one teacher at their school in Jonesboro, AK
•Two young men murdered 13 teens and teachers before turning the guns on themselves at Columbine High School
•Timothy McVeigh blew up the Morrow Federal building, killing 168 adults and children
•Susan Smith rolled her car into a lake with her small children still strapped into their car seats.
What can you do?
•If it is in your family, ask for help.
•If it is someone you know, talk to them about getting help.
•Donate time or money to a neighborhood watch, Yellow Ribbon Program in your child’s school, or local domestic violence program.
•If you see child abuse, report it.
•Be a mentor
•Volunteer at your child’s school
•Talk to your child
•Get to know your child’s friends

Warnings of survival safety issues
Survivalist business booms as economy flails
By NICHOLAS K. GERANIOS , 12.01.08, 12:13 PM EST
The Armchair Survivalist believes the nation is falling into chaos, and he wants to help.
He offers practical advice for dealing with riots, wars, natural disasters and food shortages, which he says are imminent because of the worldwide economic meltdown and the incoming Obama administration.
"Too many things are occurring at the same time. It's upsetting people," said the Survivalist, whose real name is Kurt Wilson.
So this Martha Stewart for the camo-and-compound crowd provides valuable information on nonperishable foods, portable water purifiers and defensive weapons. His catalog business, Survival Enterprises, sells what you need for the coming hard times.
Northern Idaho has long been a magnet for anti-government types and Wilson moved his business here from California in 1998.
He operates out of a modest strip mall that is, ironically, on Government Way in Coeur d'Alene. Much of the work is packing and shipping orders for survival supplies such as canned bacon with a camouflage label and cases of military MREs.
Wilson started "The Armchair Survivalist" radio show about a year ago because so many people were asking him for advice on what he considered simple problems. The Saturday show can be heard over his Web site, on shortwave radio, or a few broadcast stations.
The survivalist movement was considered somewhat on the decline since it peaked around 1996, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center, which studies fringe movements around the country. But the SPLC warned last week of a rise in "hyper-survivalist paramilitary groups" as a result of the Obama election.
"Some conspiracy theorists and fringe "Patriot" radio hosts are seeking to reverse that course by calling on their friends and countrymen to arm themselves, organize and head for the hills in preparation for a fast-approaching second Civil War," the SPLC said on its web site.
Jim Rawles, editor of survivalblog.com said unique visits to his site are climbing. They've doubled to about 107,000 a week, he said. But he doesn't think Obama's election is the main reason.
"The main driver right now is the economic situation," he said. "A lot of people are deeply concerned we are on the cusp of another economic depression."
While the term "survivalist" often carries negative connotations of reactionary politics, advocates of the lifestyle say it has a long, proud place in history -- see Lewis and Clark -- and in fiction such as "The Swiss Family Robinson."
Barton Biggs, former chief global strategist for Morgan Stanley, recently wrote a book in which he warned that people should anticipate the breakdown of civilized society. He suggested creating a "safe haven" and stocking it with canned food, liquids, medicine, seed, fertilizer and other tools for survival.
In the same vein, Wilson devotes most of his program to topics like vacuum packing of food, generator silencing, and fire starting
But his politics are also clear. During a recent program he referred to "low-life interesting creatures that crawl over the border to get on Social Security." He said Barack Obama was a communist whose election was largely due to his race.
Yet business is booming at levels Wilson has not seen since the Y2K scare.
He attributes that to Americans' sense of vulnerability because of economic woes and a series of high profile disasters, most notably Hurricane Katrina. People feel they have to fend for themselves, he said.
Wilson spent part of his childhood living in a log cabin in the woods, where he picked up many of the skills once common among rural Americans but now largely forgotten.
During the Depression, for example, many Americans survived by planting gardens, he said.
Wilson said his show is intended for a mainstream audience, but it's not exactly "Paul Harvey."
On a recent program, he ripped the Wall Street bailout package, Democrats, rising taxes, disappearing pensions and the possible expansion of welfare. He warned that the worldwide credit crunch may leave cargo ships stranded in ports, making food imports to the U.S. impossible.
During breaks, there were advertisements for a product that can obscure license plates from red light cameras ("when cameras flash, you'll save some cash"), a cure for intestinal parasites, and a device for converting humidity into drinking water.
He doesn't worry so much about people who live in the country, figuring they can fend for themselves.
"The guy in an apartment has no chance in hell," he said. "I help people to become more self-sufficient."
One customer lives in a small Manhattan apartment, where he keeps stacks of canned food covered by tablecloths in his living room so they look like end tables, Wilson said.
Wilson recommends spending whatever it takes to have a year's worth of food on hand because grocery stores will be immediately stripped bare when disaster strikes.
Survival food and equipment can be expensive, but there are tricks to cutting the costs, such as buying cases of canned food on sale.
"I like yard sales," he said. "All true survivalists like yard sales." -end story-
Bulletblocker doesn't necessarily endorse these views but what we do see is that this is an unsafe world where our bulletproof vests, bulletproof backpacks, first aid kits, survival kits and other bullet proof products are more and more needed.
